Let's work together to brainstorm some things we can put into a mission statement, which will be posted on The Siren when we launch.  I'd like for everyone to contribute to this document.  Begin by adding any ideas you have in response to  any of these questions (you do not have to answer each question):

1.  What purpose should The Siren serve for the school and its contributors?

2.  How can we sum up the types of content that belong in a "literary magazine"?  Don't forget that we will publish more than just print pieces.

3.  What can we place in mission statement that will get readers excited about The Siren?

4.  What can we place in a mission statement that will ease any concerns that parents, teachers, or administrators have about the possibility of inappropriate content being published in The Siren?

Place your contributions below this line.  Thanks.

The Siren, the online literary magazine of Notre Dame de Sion High School, is a unique forum in which members of the Sion community can explore and share their creative talents. Contributors may use an expanded definition of 'literary' as they express themselves through writing, visual art, photography, video or audio submissions, or other media. The Siren seeks to foster creative self-expression in members of the student body and the faculty and staff, and any creative work that expresses the ideas or thoughts of a member of the Sion community will be considered to have merit.

Beyond their creative merit, submissions will be considered for their adherence to the Notre Dame de Sion mission statement and honor code, as well as general rules of appropriateness and respect as determined by the editing staff. The Siren is not a static publication but is constantly in motion, adding new content and changing to match the progression of technology. By consciously affecting this change, the staff of The Siren hopes to create a publication that is not only entertaining to read and view but offers a way for contributors to take advantage of the opportunities created by use of technology.

1. I think most importantly the Siren should be purely for entertainment and a place where the girl's here are free to convey their personalities.
2. Almost any type of (appropriate) self expression should be allowed on the Siren. This can include writing, art, video, podcast, etc.
3. Something about how the Siren is a way to express yourself. A place where your creativity can be displayed and enjoyed by others. It's a good way to show who you are and show your many talents.
4. Personally, I hope that our sion community can understand that this is clearly going to be an appropriate website and creative outlet for all of the sion students. We simply need to stress that we take everyone into consideration when choosing what is allowed on the website and what is not.

1. The Siren is a creative and unique way of displaying artistic and journalistic expression. It serves as a cultural, comedic, and informative online source.
2. The Siren is not limited to any specific type of writing or artistic ability. It is an online literary magazine open to fresh new ideas that meet appropriate criteria. Submissions are not limited to print pieces. The Siren encourages the exploration of media and technology, and encourages a wide range of submission categories. These include video submissions, podcasts, music, artwork, poems, short stories, creative writing, etc.
The Siren staffers look forward to seeing your submissions!
3. The Siren is unlike any publication offered at Sion! It encourages readers and staffers to explore a new world of technology. Everything from videos to poems are offered on The Siren. This online publication was created a source for self expression and to show case the hidden talents students possess.
4. The Siren is a modern style of journalism. The world is constantly progressing and advancing in both technology and culture. The internet is becoming the primary source for information and entertainment. Sion's goal is to educate students and prepare them for their futures. The Siren is the most advanced journalism program offered at Sion that deals with online publications. The Siren's goal is to educate your daughter's and students and encourage them to learn and understand the advantages of modern technology.

Okay here is a draft of the mission statement, in an attempt to synthesize everyone's comments into one statement:
